Mexican Foods
Put on your sombrero and order in!
If you’re up for deliver food from South of the border, then Mexican food is a delightful option. The zesty and piquant flavors of Mexican fare will leave you wanting to throw on a poncho and sombrero.
Tacos, fajitas, enchiladas and salsa – Mexican delivery options are plentiful – however many dishes are also extremely high in fat and calories. Sour cream, cheeses, ground beef, deep fried tortillas and guacamole are yummy, but super high in calories and fats.
If you’re worried about fat and calories, steer clear of the following Mexican take out options:
- Taco Salad – sure, it’s a salad, but it’s topped with handfuls of cheese and sour cream and it’s served in a fried tortilla shell bowl. A typical taco salad contains almost the equivalent amount of calories as 2 Quarter Pounders from McDonald’s!
- Zesty Chicken Dishes – beware of the terms “zesty” and “crunchy” in your chicken tacos – these are deep fried terms that indicate the food is full of fat and sodium
- Enchiladas – these deep fried delicacies sure are yummy, but consider that they are fried and jam-packed with cheese and sour cream
- Beef Tacos – ground beef scores the lowest in nutritional value and the highest in fat and calories compared to almost every other protein source. Opt instead for grilled chicken or refried bean soft tacos.
- Hard Tacos vs. Soft Tacos – the decision is easy if you’re worried about gaining weight – opt for soft tacos (whole wheat if you can get it), as hard tacos are basically wrapped in one big fried tortilla chip
- Watch your Toppings – go for fresh salsa and low fat sour cream – rather than cheese, full fat sour cream and guacamole
Never fear, and don’t throw your sombrero to the ground yet. There are many Mexican dishes that are light on the waistline andthe wallet. Try one of the following light Mexican foods from your delivery menu:
- Veggie Quesadilla – minus the guacamole, sour cream, or refried beans
- Grilled Chicken Fajita – minus the cheese and topped with fresh tomato salsa
- Bean & Cheese Burrito – complemented with a green salad
- Rice & Beans – this is a healthy option because it’s a great protein source that will fill you up – just watch the sour cream and cheese – avoid both if you can
- Veggie Refried Beans – believe it or not most refried bean are NOT vegetarian, if the menu says vegetarian refried beans you know you’re getting a dish that’s low in fat and high in protein
- Grilled Burritos – look to low-carb choices – like veggies, grilled chicken, steak and shrimp
